Abstract: Multicultural education is a complex and contestedfield that aims to address the challenges of cultural diversity in society andeducation. This paper critically reviews the literature on critical andemerging discourses in multicultural education, with a special focus onpre-service teacher education programs. The paper identifies the majorconceptual flaws in multicultural education theory and practice, such asessentializing culture, ignoring power relations, and neglecting themultiplicity and fluidity of identities. The paper also discusses some of thesuggestions and alternatives proposed by scholars in the context ofpost-multiculturalism, such as interculturalism, cosmopolitanism, and criticalmulticulturalism.
