Abstract

Modern construction world focused on energyefficient and sustainable construction materials. Reducingcement consumption by partial replacement of cement withwaste supplementary cementitious material (SCM) improvesthe sustainability of concrete and mortar used forconstruction works. Partial replacement of cement with combination of twosupplementary cementitious material’s derived from wastematerials yields a ternary blended green cement mortarwhich was more effective than conventional mortar in termsof both strength and performance. Waste banana leaves andcattle bones were collected, dried and powdered separatelyusing miller machine. SCM was made with different combination of banana leafpowder (BLP) and cattle bone powder (CBP). Experimentalworks were carried out on mortar and concrete with 20%, 30%, 40% partial replacement of cement with SCM. Optimum percentage of composite SCM for partialreplacement of cement was identified as 30%, with 10% CBPand 20% BLP. The concrete containing the composite SCM demonstratedhigher strength and better economic viability than normalconcrete. The findings indicated that the utilization ofagricultural and animal waste materials as supplementarycementitious materials can contribute significantly tosustainable construction practices while reducingenvironmental impacts associated with cement production..
